Steve
SHAPIRO
Steve Shapiro began working professionally in New York City in 1985.
His many years of experience as vibist, producer, arranger, and programmer
have led to recordings with artists such as Phil Collins, Whitney Houston,
Ornette Coleman, Pat Martino, Regina Belle, and SpyroGyra. He appeared
on Steely Dan's Two Against Nature, which received 4 Grammy Awards
including Album-of-the-Year.
Steve has also composed music for many television series, films,
TV commercials and trailers. He is a long-time arranger for the Walt
Disney Company, and has been involved in projects for over thirty feature
film releases.
Steve grew up in Connecticut and was a member of the same award-winning
high school ensemble that produced musicians like Brad Mehldau, Joel
Frahm, and Pat Zimmerli. As a teenager, he began studying with artists
Bob Moses, Dave Samuels, and David Friedman. But most important was
time spent with composer and bassist Steve Swallow, who generously
shared his thoughts on many subjects. Enrolling at Yale University
in the fall of 1981, Steve came into contact with noted jazz composer
Anthony Davis, who he credits with opening his ears to Duke Ellington.
Steve has received awards from Berklee College of Music and IAJE,
and has been featured in magazines such as Mix, Video-Systems and Modern
Drummer.
