EXCERPT
From "People
in Between" Boarding Call (The Opening)
(On
Scrim Title: 'Boarding Call.' Throughout
the theatre, over the loudspeaker system, we hear the sound of a busy
airport: planes leaving and arriving, announcements, boarding calls,
etc. Lights and title dim. From behind scrim, Claude--the Flight Attendant
appears in silhouette. He is weary, irritable, and speaks with a quasi-African
accent. As the scrim lights fade, lights come up on stage. Claude enters.
He is not happy.)
Flight
Attendant Claude:
Good
evening ladies and gentlemen! We would like to welcome you aboard
and to say, "Thank you for flying Air International!" I am your host
and flight attendant, Claude Kmfesi Devonshire Duvallier Azziza Makeeba
Makuba Dinakos Wincelas Hobart Chang Johnson, and this is flight 452,
destination . . . "God Knows Where," scheduled to depart at 2:13 AM.
If this is not your destination, please check your ticket and get
out! . . . I'm joking! It's a joke. Just a little joke . . . But you
do have to leave. Now, if you would, take a moment and give your attention
to my fellow flight attendants, Monique and . . . (He looks around)
Evette -- whenever she decides to crawl out of the bottle . . . as
they assist me in demonstrating our emergency procedures. Please pay
close attention, for these instructions are stated for your safety
and peace of mind. (He demonstrates.)
Should
there be a sudden decrease in cabin pressure, this ridiculously tiny
oxygen mask will release from above. Simply place the little cup over
your face, pull the string, and inhale . . . (Under his breath)
Good Luck! . . . In the unlikely event that we should have to attempt
a water landing . . . As the flames rip through the body of the plane
from the terrorists's bomb streaking from the ground below -- and
we slam into the Atlantic Ocean! Splitting the fuselage! Scattering
bags and belongings! And casting our bodies to the four corners of
the earth!! . . . Please remember that your seat cushion also functions
as a flotation device . . .
