Introducing
an outstanding new book that teaches the basics of drum set playing....
Drum
Set Fundamentals is designed to help the drum set player develop a strong
foundation on the instrument in a variety of styles, so that he or she
will learn the necessary skills to be a good rhythm section player.
Dave
Mancini states in the introduction of the book:
"My purpose
in this book is to introduce the drum set student to three basic styles
of music - swing, rock and funk, and latin - and help the student
to develop the necessary coordination on the drum set to play these
styles in a variety of musical situations. I also hope to provide
the school band director with a method book that clearly illustrates
the fundamentals of drum set playing, and will aid him in developing
drummers who will be good rhythm section players in the school jazz
ensemble."
Included
in the book are chapters on drum tuning and proper selection of cymbals,
the set up of the drum set as well as the placement of the drum set
within the rhythm section and jazz ensemble, and techniques for playing
the bass drum and hi-hat.
Another
exciting feature is that all of the exercises have been recorded by
Dave Mancini on a cassette tape that is included with the book. This
allows the student to hear how the time patterns and fills should be
played, and will aid him in developing the proper feeling and concept
for each of the three basic styles discussed in the book.
The final
chapter in the book discusses the reading and interpretation of jazz
ensemble charts which is often a mystery for drummers. The printed drum
parts and recorded illustrations in this chapter, which also feature
Dave Mancini on drum set and are from the William Allen Music Stage
One Series, should help to clear up a lot of the confusion regarding
jazz ensemble chart reading.
