Katie Nutt:
Early One Morning
(Sons of Sound SSPCD003)
Early One
Morning is a one-act liturgical
musical, looking through the eyes of Mary
Magdalene. We meet her early on Sunday morning,
two days after the crucifixion; she is going
to the tomb with spices and perfume to prepare
Christ's body for burial. We see her confusion
and doubt: was it all lies? She traces, in
memories, their meeting, her time with Christ
and the disciples, and the events in Jerusalem
leading to his capture and death. Finally,
we witness in real-time her shock at the
open and empty tomb, then her joy as she
meets the resurrected Christ.
Based
on the few passages of scripture which mention
Magdalene, especially the Luke story of Mary
at the tomb, and accepting as plausible the later
tradition of Magdalene-as-fallen-woman, the story
unfolds in a ten-song monologue for one performer.
Early
One Morning is written by Ron
Melrose. Original theatrical direction
was provided by Edward Stern.
Katie
Nutt performs on the recording, available
from Sons of Sound. Ms. Nutt has also performed
the work at the Lamb's Theatre on Broadway.
In performances elsewhere around the country,
Noelle Player (Cats) has taken the
role of Mary Magdalene.
