Denis DiBlasio/Dave Mancini: Salt Peanuts

INFORMATION

artist biography
Salt Peanuts [CD]

DiBlasio does indeed blaze. The former Maynard Ferguson baritonist jumps in with both feet and doesn't let up until the end. Lengthy lines agilely negotiating the entire range of his normally cumbsome horn set the pace for the up-tunes, several of which are taken at super-human tempos. And pianist Biff Hannon, another Ferguson alumnus, follows his lead. Both men effortlessly generate seamless improvisations at a breakneck speed with never a stumble. Meanwhile, bassist Frank Pullara and co-leader/drummer Dave Mancini prvide the rock-solid underpinnings and challenging accompaniment such explosive excursions require. But this music is not all about visceral stimulation. The group also offers a couple of ballads, one of which DiBlasio plays on flute in a warm and lyrical manner, as well as a Latin and some medium-tempo tunes. Of the latter, DiBlasio's own "All Nighter" recalls Sonny Rollins's Caribbean-style compositions in its rhythmic shape and even in the saxophonist's solo. Recorded live to four track without overdubs or edits and with mostly one take per tune, the CD achieves its makers' hoped-for result of reproducing the ambiance of a live concert performance.
