Few jazz musicians have devoted themselves to acoustic guitar, but Gene Bertoncini is a happy exception. In this 1992 collection, he explores songs from film and stage, along with other memorable standards. His lyricism is especially evident in his solo interpretations, which include "Edelweiss" (from The Sound Of Music), a haunting version of "'Round Midnight" that begins and ends with his simulation of a bell tolling, and an intricate interpretation of "Theme from 'Summer of '42'" that seques into a trio rendition of "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life."

Bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Akira Tana join him on several other tracks as well. After the leader's magical unaccompanied introduction to "The Shadow Of Your Smile," the addition of Reid and Tana mark the transformation of Bertoncini's arrangement into a snappy bop setting.

Their Latin-flavored take of "Stella By Starlight" is also a delight. The intimate sound throughout this studio session also helps to make it an essential purchase for fans of jazz guitar.
