In The Ring

All About Jazz

All About Jazz New York Nov 2005The funky yet elegant new release from this drummer/bandleader is right on the mark. In the Ring is a bright fresh sound of jazz that doesn’t come down the pike too often with a superior quartet, a bandleader who knows his trade and recording quality that gives you a clear vision into the music.

From the first note of “Billie’s Bounce”, Marchica’s rendition of the Parker classic raises the eyebrow and brings your ear closer to the fabric of these fantastic musicians. The interplay between bassist Lonnie Plaxico and Marchica exemplify musicianship. Groove is the name of the game on this recording and it sticks.

What is interesting here is Marchica’s approach to the recording. The layout of compositions and the production itself is done in four star fashion. He follows up the opening track with a composition titled “Worm” which is a one minute drum solo that shows off some of the Marchica chops. And just when you think the fun may turn, a hopping version of “Tequila” kicks this quartet into high gear. The Chuck Rio classic puts on a new set of clothes and allows four jazz masters to strut their stuff.

The mid way marker of this superb recording has Marchica’s “9H5” and a phenomenal original composition titled “The Joneses”. Both show off that not only is Marchica an extraordinary drummer, but composer as well.

His cohort in composition, guitarist Rodney Jones, also contributes two originals that fit the bill and complement all that surround it. Jones can also play that guitar.

With his George Benson-like style, one listen makes you want move your feet. With all that is offered here, In the Ring closes with stunning renditions of two jazz classics, a sweet “I Can’t Get Started” and the always fun “Summertime”.

Just when you think this incredible art form cannot get any better, here comes Ray Marchica.
